ApisNetworks recently added Ruby on Rails support to their hosting packages. Unlike many hosting companies, you’ll find quite a selection of hosting plans that offer this support. For this review, we’re going to focus on their Basic Plan.
This plan includes 400 megs of disk space and 20 gigs of monthly data transfer. The amount of disk space is a little light, particularly if you are planning on really utilizing Ruby on Rails to develop a lot of applications, but if you’re just looking to give Ruby a try, the size may work just fine. If you do need more disk space, their higher priced plans do offer more space and more monthly data transfer.
A control panel is provided, and you can take it for a test drive before you purchase an account. Support for xdebug profiling is offered, as well as MySQL 5.0.18, PHP 4.0 and 5.1 and the eAccelerator PHP Optimizer. This plan does not include support for PostSGRE datasbases, but once again this is offered on their higher price plans if you require this feature. FTP access, cron job access and shell access are provided with this account, which is nice, considering it is a shared hosting plan.
Urchin 5 is provided for website statistics but support for SSL is not available for this account. If you need more ecommerce features such as Miva or a dedicated IP address, you would need to take a look at their Super Plan.
ApisNetworks does not go into much detail on what aspects of Ruby on Rails they support, but they do offer easy installation via their proprietary online control panel. Support options are limited to an online knowledgebase, email and some telephone support. The number is not toll-free and ApisNetworks lets you know on their site that the hold times may be long.
For the money, this is a solid hosting plan, but it would be nice if they went into a little more detail on Ruby on Rails and what exactly they do support.Related Posts:
