Are You Paying Too Much For Your Hosting?

With a wide variety of pricing plans available in web hosting, it can be confusing to decide how much money is too much money when you purchase your hosting package. The type of package you need will largely determine how much money you should or should not spend. We’ll detail each type of hosting plan below and give you some general pricing guidelines.

Windows Hosting ’ Windows hosting is more expensive than Unix hosting, simply because the platform is not free to use and the applications required to run a server on Windows are not either. This means that you can expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $30 for a basic to good size plan. If you absolutely must have a Windows platform to run .ASP or .NET frameworks, you won’t have much choice here. However, you can use the above guidelines to find the right price for you.

Unix or PHP Hosting ’ Unix and PHP hosting is much cheaper than Windows. Since there are so many different hosting companies that offer Unix hosting packages, the market is very competitive. You should be able to find a hosting package for as little as $3 per month. For larger packages, you should not expect to pay over $25, depending on your disk space and data transfer needs.

Ecommerce Hosting ’ Ecommerce needs are more specialized, and as such, hosting packages for ecommerce are more expensive than budget packages. If you are looking for a plan that offers a free shopping cart, as well as extra add-ons to run your ecommerce site, you should be able to spend under $30 per month. However, if you need additional SSL certificates or applications that are not included for your site, you may need to spend around $300 in one-time or yearly licensing fees.

Budget Hosting ’ Budget hosts are practically a dime a dozen. You will be able to find a wide variety of companies, all offering similar packages. You should not expect to pay more than $10 per month for budget hosting packages. In fact, some companies offer these plans for as little as $1 per month.

Dedicated Hosting ’ This area of hosting is by far the most expensive. Your price for a dedicated server will depend entirely on your specific needs. If you need a great deal of data transfer, you can expect to pay as much as $400 per month. However, there are many different new companies that are offering dedicated plans for under $100 per month. Do your research to make sure you are getting the best deal.

There are many different types of fees that are associated with web hosting. By taking the time to comparison shop not only for your domain name, applications and software but also your hosting package, you can end up spending far less per month.

Each website will require a different type of hosting package. If you need more features in a certain area, you can expect to pay a little more than you would if you had a cookie-cutter site. You can still come out ahead if you do take the time to compare a variety of different plans.
