HostRoute currently has seven shared hosting plans that range from almost ridiculously small at 20 megs of disk space up to 1 gig. For this review, we’ll be looking at their 1 gig plan, which is currently priced at $24.95 per month. There is a discount if you purchase a year’s worth of hosting in advance, so let’s see what this plan has to offer.
As previously mentioned, you’ll get 1 gig of disk space and 30 gigs of monthly data transfer, which is pretty fair for the money. A lot of hosting companies have similar packages priced at a much lower amount, but as we mentioned in our 5/22 podcast, the purchase price isn’t the only way to determine overall value. 300 email accounts are included, as well as anti-virus tools and IMAP. You can have up to 10 mailing lists, which should be a sufficient amount for most needs.
You can host up to 50 subdomains with this plan, and 10 FTP accounts are provided. For MySQL databases, you’ll be limited to 10, but this should be enough for most sites. We always like to see an unlimited amount of databases, but that isn’t always possible, depending on the hosting company. It’s better than a lot of hosting companies, so it’s not really a point to quibble on. An SSL secure server comes with this plan, which is great for ecommerce sites and daily back-ups are performed.
The usual CGI bin scripts are included, as well as a shopping cart and other tools. It doesn’t appear that Fantastico is offered, so if you need to install a photo gallery or a CMS, be prepared to do it on your own. CPanel is the available control panel for this plan and they have provided a demo if you’re not familiar with how this panel works. You’ll be able to use this to password protect your directories, access your back-up files and manage many aspects of your site.
For technical support, a help desk is provided, as well as some nice documentation that should be useful to most beginners, or those with simple questions. They do not offer phone or email support, but you can check out their staff blog, or manage basic account items from their support center. Overall, this plan has some nice features and although it’s more expensive than other plans that offer similar features, it is a nice plan. If they had offered a 30-day money-back guarantee on their plans, they would have been ranked higher in our directory.Related Posts:
