How Much Control Do You Need Over Your Server?

With the advent of control panels, webmasters have more control over their server space, even if they are not skilled in advance applications. However, will this be enough control for you? We’ll detail each skill level and type of website, to help you get an idea if the hosting package you are interested in will provide the level of control you will need.

Beginner ’ Basic Website. For a beginner, you will need to have FTP access, or the ability to upload files via a web based control panel. Many first time webmasters find that the web based option is much easier to understand and use. You will also need to be able to set up your email accounts by yourself, and any email forwarders that you need.

Beginner ’ Advanced or Business Website. This is where a control panel that can walk you through complicated processes comes in handy. One of the most popular control panels, Cpanel, is offered by many different web hosting companies. This will allow you to add email addresses, manage your files and check your statistics in one easy location.

Beginner ’ Dedicated Server. If you are an absolute beginner, trying to run a dedicated server on your own, you can quickly become overwhelmed. The amount of options and functions you can perform on a dedicated server is quite large. If you do not know what you are doing, you can quickly create havoc. It is best to have a control panel, such as WebHostManager, that will allow you have some control but in a more friendly, graphical user interface.

Expert ’ Basic Site. If you are an expert at running your own site, but only need a simple site, how much control is really overkill? At the very least, you should be able to FTP, have CGI access and control over the basics of your site. Having access to raw data logs, such as error logs is also helpful, but not absolutely necessary.

Expert ’ Advanced or Business Website. An expert will be able to get a lot more out of their advanced site if they have the ability to have more control. You should be able to run CRON jobs, monitor or block certain IP’s from your site, access all of your log files and still be able to do the basics simply and quickly. Having SSH or telnet access is also recommended.

Expert ’ Dedicated Server. This is where you can really put your skills to the test. You will need to have root access to your server, telnet or SSH access, the ability to restart your server on your own, advanced mail functions and many other important utilities. If you are an expert, it’s almost impossible to have too much control over your server.

These are just a few examples of what you will need to be able to control on your website. Everyone has a different skill level and a different amount of time to actually spend on the inner workings of their site. If you plan to dedicate just a few minutes a week to your website, you probably won’t need to have much control over your server. However, if you plan on running your site several hours a week, or if you plan to become a reseller, you need as much control as you can get.
