We covered MaximumASP’s announcement of their datacenter expansion in our 05/15/2006 Hosting Industry Briefing. Let’s see what this expansion means for their hosting plans and their customers. For this review, we’re going to take a look at their S-1 Dedicated Server Plan, which starts at $199 per month.
This server is a Pentium 4 2.8GHz and features an 80 gig hard drive and 1 gig of RAM, but only 200 gigs of monthly bandwidth. While it’s nice to see a Pentium 4 in this price range, MaximumASP falls down a little bit when it comes to their bandwidth allotment. There are several dedicated hosting companies, which you can find in our WHI Guide to Cheap Dedicated Hosting that offer 2000 gigs of monthly data transfer for less than $100 per month.
One other curious limitation is the amount of email addresses – 50, for a dedicated server. At this price range, they’d better be offering an unlimited amount of email addresses, just to stay competitive. This is a very low amount, and for a large business, may not be enough. You shouldn’t have to add-on email addresses when a plan is this expensive. 4 IP addresses are provided, which again is less than the industry standard.
The disk space for SQL databases is limited to 100 megs, which is just silly when it comes to dedicated hosting. You should be able to have the control over your server that you would expect with a dedicated solution. At this price range, and with the features provided, you’re basically getting a glorified, overpriced shared hosting account.
While MaximumASP may be a Microsoft Gold Certified host, and while their datacenter is top notch, they really fall down when it comes to two of the most importants facets of attracting new customers – price and features. With a little tweaking here and there, this plan might be worth the money. As it is right now, however, it’s just too expensive.Related Posts:
