Rhyton Hosting offers several different virtual server plans, from very tiny to ranging in size from 150 megs of disk space up to 4 gigs. It’s not common to see a 150 meg hosting plan billed as a virtual private server, and that may be stretching it just a bit. Let’s take a look at their Virtual Ultra plan to see what it has to offer.
This plan starts at $250 per month and offers 4 gigs of disk space and 100 gigs of data transfer per month. This price is extremely high given the alloted space, so let’s hope there are other features that will make this plan worth this kind of cash. Unlimited email addresses and FTP accounts are provided, but there is no mention of how many MySQL databases are included with this plan, although they are supported.
Access is provided to your Virtual Server Configuration Files, which is nice to see, and support is provided for an SSL certificate. You’ll have full shell access to your server, and nightly back-ups are performed. A personal FTP server is provided, as well as a Real Audio server for streaming audio files from your site. You’ll be able to configure your own MIME types, and http streaming is also supported.
Technical support is offered for free, but is limited to email support at this time. A FAQ is provided as well as other documentation, but site owners who are new to hosting may not find all the information they need. Domain name registration is available from Rhyton but is overpriced at $25 per year. We have received some reports that it is virtually impossible to transfer a domain registered through Rhyton to another company, so you may want to keep this in mind.
The overall impression that is gained from Rhyton’s site is that they are trapped in the past. Not much has changed on their site during the past 6 years and their pricing reflects this. While there are some advanced features available with this plan, not one of them is worth the monthly price in this competitive market.Related Posts:
