Static IP’s Explained
When you are purchasing your dedicated server, you should be able to purchase at least one static IP address. Many companies even give you a block of IP addresses, which is very useful if you plan on reselling your space. There are many benefits to having a static IP address.
As SPAM becomes more prevalent and efforts to stop it in its tracks grow more intense, many companies have been wrongfully punished as spammers if they happen to share an IP with a known company guilty of spamming.
In a shared hosting situation, you will commonly be sharing an IP address with several other customers. If one of them is a spammer, the IP address for everyone may be blacklisted.
If you are concerned about being lumped in as a spammer or if you have had problems with this in the past, a static IP is the best answer. If you are running an ecommerce site, or if you send out frequent emails, it is vital to make sure that you will not be wrongfully labeled. An accusation of being a spammer can stop a company’s marketing efforts dead in their tracks, whether it is valid or not.
A static IP basically means that it is an IP address that is yours alone and will not change. This IP address will be associated with your domain name through the use of your nameserver.
The IP address and DNS information will be given to ICANN, which is responsible for making sure that domains resolve to the correct IP address.
If you have a block of several IP’s that come with your dedicated server, you will be able to use them in a variety of different ways. If you plan to host more than one site for yourself, you can assign each one a different IP. This can be very beneficial and helps cut down the time it takes to resolve a domain. If there are several domains associated with one IP address, you can run into problems.
Resellers will commonly use their block of IP addresses to create shared IP’s. This means that you can use one IP address for several customers. However, you will need to make sure that there are not too many domains associated with the same IP. You may need to purchase an additional block of IP addresses if this becomes a problem.
If you plan on using SSL on your website for ecommerce solutions, a dedicated or static IP address is a very good idea. This will allow your customers to know that you are who you claim you are and that there isn’t someone else using this certificate.
If you need to offer anonymous FTP privileges, you will also need to have a static IP. Since shared IP addresses have many different clients, it is quite common for hosting companies to turn off anonymous FTP for security reasons.
