Web Hosting Information’s Guide to Ruby on Rails Hosting

As Ruby on Rails becomes more popular, more site owners are trying to find hosting companies that offer support for Ruby. We have reviewed several companies and rounded up some of the best deals for you. You’ll find the full review for each host linked below in the descriptions of the available hosting packages.

Dynamic10 – The Professional Hosting Plan from Dynamic10 offers support for Ruby on Rails, but unfortunately, the hosting company didn’t include much information on what components are available. However, this plan starts at $8.95 per month, and offers 1 gig of disk space, 60 gigs of monthly data transfer, unlimited MySQL databases and a lot more features. Technical support is available 24/7 through their help desk.

Digital Space Hosting – While Digital Space has five plans that support Ruby on Rails, we reviewed their Advanced Plan which starts at $9.95 per month. You’ll get 2 gigs of disk space, 20 gigs of monthly data transfer, a handy email tool that features a calendar and a to-do list, a unique IP address and support for other scripting languages as well. Telephone technical support is offered during business hours and online support is available 24/7.

JaguarPC – The Longhorn Plan from Jaguar offers support for Ruby and starts at $11.97 per month. 6 gigs of disk space, 180 gigs of monthly data transfer and unlimited email accounts, ftp accounts, MySQL databases and subdomains are offered. You’ll be able to edit your own DNS and MX records with this hosting plan and several other advanced features are included. 24/7 tech support is offered by phone, live chat, support tickets and email.

Apis Networks – The Basic Plan from Apis starts at $9.95 per month and offers 400 megs of disk space, 20 gigs of monthly data transfer, xdebug profiling, Urchin 5, easy installation of Ruby components via the control panel for your site and many other features. Support is a little limited, and Apis is upfront that hold times may be long for their phone support hotline, which is not toll-free. Email support is available though and the knowledgebase is pretty comprehensive.

3S Host – The Ruby on Rails package from this hosting company is currently priced at $10 per month and comes with 10 gigs of disk space, unlimited bandwidth, 15 MySQL databases and 300 email accounts. The Ruby Gems package is pre-installed and FastCGI is also provided. A 30-day money-back guarantee is offered and a support desk is provided, but the hours of operation were not noted on the site when this review was written.

TextDrive – You don’t hear about Ruby on Rails without hearing at least some mention of TextDrive. Their basic plans don’t allow development, but their business and dedicated options allow you a little more freedom. Most of their plans are well priced, and you’ll have the ability to do quite a bit when it comes to development. At least ten different CMS’s are offered with most of their hosting plans and a bunch of other nice features are thrown in as well.

Dream Host – The entry-level account from Dream Host starts at $7.95 per month and offers a unique method of calculating disk space. You’ll start with 20 gigs, but this number is increased by 160 megs each week, for as long as your account is active. The bandwidth allotment starts at 1 TB per month, and also increases by 8 gigs each week. 24/7 online support is offered and numerous other features are included with this account.

We’ll continue to add to this list as we review more hosting companies that offer support for Ruby on Rails. Know of a Ruby Host you’d like us to review? Let us know by sending an email to: questions [at] webhostinginformation.net
